Two dates answer two different questions

Baume & Mercier’s anniversary account traces the Baume family business to 1830 in the Swiss Jura. It dates William Baume and Paul Mercier’s partnership in Geneva to 1918. Both dates belong in the story, with their labels intact. The earlier one describes the family’s starting point; the later one describes the partnership associated with the combined name. A reader does not need to discard one to take the other seriously. What matters is resisting the temptation to turn two beginnings into a single modern incorporation date. This distinction becomes especially useful when you compare a period signature, a collection anniversary and a current company record. Each can preserve a different layer of the house’s identity.

Evidence: Riviera 50th Anniversary: origins and design

A shaped watch with its own designer

The house dates Riviera to 1973, attributes its design to Jean-Claude Gueit and describes its twelve-sided form. Its retrospective records an electronic tuning-fork ESA 6192 in the initial version. That last detail interrupts a familiar assumption: an established design does not imply one unchanging movement technology. Rather than attaching a famous name from a neighbouring design history, follow the attribution actually made for this watch. Then ask which generation and reference you are viewing. A case outline can remain recognisable while the movement, dimensions, indications and bracelet evolve. Looking at the outline and reading the technical record are complementary ways into the design; neither supplies the other’s answer.

The current owner changed in 2026

The joint Richemont–Damiani release dated 1 July 2026 confirms completion of Damiani Group’s acquisition of 100% of Baume & Mercier. It says Richemont will provide operational services temporarily and leaves financial terms undisclosed. This is a concrete reason to date an ownership statement. A historic Richemont association remains part of the industrial history, while the completed transaction changes the current published relationship. Interim operational support should also keep its own label; it is not evidence that the sale failed to close. The release establishes the announced acquisition scope, not a complete register of the buyer’s ultimate beneficial owners or a detailed account of every transferred operating entity. Those further questions remain open in this profile.

Five days are a reserve claim, not a diary

Clifton 10592 is presented as an automatic Baumatic with COSC certification. Its specification gives a 120-hour reserve, 4 Hz, central seconds and date, in a 40 mm round case. Five days is an understandable way to picture that reserve, but the useful owner question is how the watch reaches its stated fully wound condition. A published capacity is not a record of your winding pattern. Keep a personal timing diary separate from the maker’s specification, and record the reference rather than just the collection name. The COSC claim is also bounded here: no individual certificate or complete test results for a particular watch were examined. Nour’s chronometer-standards guide explains how to read that next layer of evidence.

The linked manual gives the missing condition

The Baumatic manual linked from Clifton 10592 describes approximately 120 hours when fully wound. It recommends about fifty clockwise crown turns after a stop, removing the watch from the wrist to wind it, and avoiding deliberate shaking. It notes that insufficient wrist movement can leave winding incomplete. The distinction between capacity and replenishment now has a document attached. Use the applicable manual’s conditions before deciding that a stopped watch has failed its advertised reserve. This is an explanation of the consulted instructions, rather than a substitute for checking the manual supplied with your own reference. If the controls, winding feel or configuration differ, stop the comparison at the paper stage and obtain the matching guidance. No winding or reserve experiment was performed for this article.

A shared calibre does not make the case identical

Riviera Azur 300m reference 10716 is specified with automatic Baumatic, a 120-hour reserve, 4 Hz, a 42 mm case and a unidirectional bezel. Its page states 300 metres of water resistance. The reference turns the familiar Riviera outline into a useful case study: movement capacity, rotating bezel and stated case rating belong in different rows of the specification. The shared Baumatic label cannot tell you everything about the surrounding watch. Nor does a published water-resistance figure establish the present condition of a used example. Read the current applicable instructions and inspection record before relying on the case in water. Nour’s water-resistance guide develops that distinction without turning this brand profile into a diving qualification or a practical safety instrument.

A round dial can belong to another technology

Classima 10607 is a quartz reference with date, a 42 mm case and a silver-oxide battery identified in the product record. Its linked quartz manual describes time and date setting and regional end-of-life collection, rather than the Baumatic winding procedure. This is the counterexample that keeps a house profile honest. Similar-looking hours and minutes cannot decide whether a watch stores energy in the same way as a neighbouring mechanical model. Ask the technical record, then use the document intended for that configuration. Battery chemistry here is a named specification, not advice to open the case or select a replacement yourself. The manual’s disposal guidance is also explicitly regional; it should not be rewritten as a universal statement about local collection systems.

An extension has a scope and a deadline

The published extension page offers six additional years beyond a two-year limited warranty for eligible Riviera or Clifton Baumatic watches. Its conditions include an authorised purchase from 1 January 2023 and activation within sixty days of purchase or e-commerce delivery. Those conditions make the promise more informative than an isolated eight-year headline. Before relying on it, match the watch and purchase to the programme’s current regional terms and listed references. A warranty term also does not measure a watch’s running reserve or replace the service record. This edition read the conditions without registering a watch, opening an account or supplying personal information. An owner’s paperwork should record which policy applied when the extension was accepted, rather than assuming every watch bearing the house name qualified automatically.

The rewarding comparison is specific

The two consulted Baumatic product records state the same reserve and frequency, while describing different cases and bezel arrangements. The consulted Classima uses quartz. Those few distinctions provide a stronger starting point than a sweeping verdict on what the whole house makes. Put the watch’s name, reference, movement description, case specification, manual and dated ownership record on the same sheet. Leave component provenance and any independent performance comparison unanswered where the consulted material does not establish them. The house becomes interesting through these particular choices and changes, rather than through a claim that one design, technology or owner has always defined every product.

Reader exercise: separate identity from specification

Make a sheet with three columns for the named Clifton, Riviera and Classima records. Copy energy type, reserve where given, case size, indications and the exact manual link. Circle each value that belongs to a reference rather than to the entire house. Next, write the dated transaction on a separate line. The July 2026 release confirms Damiani’s completed acquisition. Explain why that line cannot supply a watch’s reserve, and why a movement name cannot supply its warranty eligibility. Finish with one unresolved question and the document that could answer it. Keep this as a reading exercise; no watch adjustment or registration is required.
