A sourced watchmaking profile

Angelus: the pause in a watchmaker’s history and two ways to measure time

Angelus dates its beginning to Le Locle in 1891. A house history with an acknowledged gap, a documented manufacturing setting and contrasting modern chronographs rewards reading the name, mechanism and company records separately.

A family workshop before the modern manufacture

Angelus’s retrospective dates its beginning to 1891 in Le Locle and names Albert and Gustav Stolz as founders. That small family sequence is a better beginning than an undifferentiated claim that the present company has existed unchanged for more than a century. A founding account introduces people and place. It does not establish the current legal entity’s incorporation date or prove continuity through later changes. Read this history with three questions in mind: who made the instrument, when did the name change hands, and what activity does today’s manufacturer actually describe? They will lead to different documents.

The calendar shared a dial with elapsed time

The same chronology places the Chronodate in 1942, followed by the name Chronodato. It describes a 45-minute chronograph counter and complete calendar, with calibre SF 217 based on SF 215. This combination gives the historic name a specific mechanical subject. The calendar belongs to the passing days, while the chronograph belongs to an interval chosen by its user. Seeing both on a dial does not make them interchangeable. The useful historical question is how a watch organised those two tasks for its contemporary wearer. It is also a reminder to examine the actual period reference: a reused collection name does not guarantee the same calendar, movement or arrangement in a later watch.

The silence is part of the record

Angelus says production eventually ceased and that the exact closure date is unclear, although alarm clocks were still advertised in 1979. It dates La Joux-Perret’s acquisition of the brand to 2011 and the Tourbillon Lumière’s introduction to 2015. Those statements leave a real gap. An advertisement is evidence of an offered product, rather than proof that a factory was still making every component that year. A revival can honour a watchmaking tradition without erasing the interruption. Keep the acquisition and public model introduction separate too: they mark different stages in bringing a name back to market. This account follows the maker’s dated retrospective; surviving advertisements, transaction papers and an independent industrial archive were not examined for this edition.

Locate the work and the entity separately

The current calibre overview presents the movements as designed, engineered and manufactured in house. The contact page places Angelus’s head office at Manufacture La Joux-Perret S.A. in La Chaux-de-Fonds. An interested manufacturer’s account is valuable here, provided its scope remains visible. It tells the reader how the brand presents its production setting. It does not show the origin of every spring, stone, screw or outsourced process. Nor does a contact address establish a complete share register. Nour’s watchmaking-beyond-the-logo guide is a useful companion: give development, production, finishing, assembly and legal ownership separate lines in your notes, then attach the document that supports each line.

Read the newer investment at its stated scale

Citizen’s current directory lists Manufacture La Joux-Perret S.A. and Manufacture Arnold & Son–Angelus SA as separate group companies. Citizen’s 12 November 2025 release says its La Joux-Perret subsidiary accepted LVMH investment; it gives no stake percentage or Angelus brand takeover. The distinction matters because a movement supplier, a brand and a corporate entity can occupy different places in the same story. Follow the named subject of a transaction instead of extending the headline to every associated watch. A supplier investment is worth recording in the industrial history. A precise claim about Angelus’s current beneficial ownership would require evidence of that specific ownership, beyond this directory and release.

A modern Chronodate is a different instrument

For Chronodate Titanium Black, reference 0CDZF.B03A.M009T, Angelus specifies automatic calibre A-500, small seconds at nine, a 30-minute chronograph counter at three and a peripheral date hand. Its account identifies a column wheel and horizontal coupling. The standalone A-500 Titanium Edition record states a 60-hour reserve and 4 Hz. Compare those indications with the earlier Chronodato before treating the modern watch as a reproduction. The repeated name offers a connection; the contemporary specification tells you what is actually being displayed. Begin with the running time, then locate the selected interval and date. That order prevents an attractive array of hands from becoming a confusing array of functions.

A second chronograph asks a different question

The yellow-gold Chronographe Télémètre, reference 0CHCQ.I01A.V010Q, uses a hand-wound A5000 and a crown-mounted monopusher. The maker describes a kilometre scale read after starting on a seen event and stopping when it is heard. The linked A5000 Golden record gives a 42-hour reserve and 3 Hz. This is a scale-reading concept, not a recommendation to approach a dangerous event or a validated distance test. Its scale has a specified purpose; the chronograph counter has its own purpose. The two named contemporary calibres also have different winding systems, reserves and frequencies. None of those differences, considered alone, establishes which watch will keep a better daily rate on your wrist. That comparison would need observations or test results.

Keep a conflicting dimension visible

The Télémètre watch page prints a 24 mm calibre diameter. Its linked A5000 Golden page prints 29.40 mm. Both consulted pages agree on reserve and frequency, but that diameter discrepancy remains unresolved. It would be misleading to choose the more plausible number and silently turn it into a settled specification. Record both with their exact page titles, then ask the manufacturer for the applicable technical sheet if the dimension matters to your research. The conflict illustrates why a linked calibre record is helpful even when a product page appears complete. Different records can expose a question that a single confident summary would conceal. No movement was measured for this article.

Angelus currently divides its collection between L.A.B. and La Fabrique, presenting the latter through historical inspiration. Treat that division as a reading aid rather than a maintenance classification. Each period or modern reference needs its applicable instructions and service assessment. This profile explains published identities and does not provide an Angelus-specific setting manual. For an owner, the next useful document is the manual matching the reference; for a historian, it is the dated record matching the object. Keep both alongside the watch’s own papers.

Reader exercise: build three timelines

Draw one line for the workshop history, one for the modern brand and one for the corporate record. Place each consulted date on the line that answers its question. Leave the historical closure as an open interval rather than adding a guessed year. Then make two movement columns, copying winding type and the stated reserve from the exact records. A-500’s stated reserve is 60 hours; A5000 Golden’s is 42. Add a final row for what these documents do not settle: individual accuracy, component sourcing and the conflicting diameter. Explain which further document would resolve each question. This is a paper comparison; operating or opening a watch is unnecessary.
