A modern company in an older watchmaking town
NOMOS places its founding in 1990 and names Roland Schwertner as founder. Its first collection followed in 1992. Those dates make a useful separation: a business can be founded before its watches reach the public, and locating that business in Glashütte does not make it as old as the town’s watchmaking tradition. The current company account calls NOMOS owner-operated and independent; the consulted pages do not disclose the complete present ownership distribution.
The design page names Tangente, Ludwig, Orion and Tetra in the first collection, while describing six watches. Four family names therefore should not silently become four original products. These names help the reader follow continuity of appearance, but the movement inside a later reference must still be checked separately.

Look for decisions rather than a style label
NOMOS explains its design through the Deutscher Werkbund and Bauhaus inheritance, yet the most revealing comparison is concrete. Tangente uses narrow numerals and angled lugs; Ludwig uses Roman hour numerals; Orion has a lenticular case; Tetra changes the outline to a square. These are the maker’s selected descriptions, rather than proof that every watch reproduces a particular historic design.
A restrained dial creates room to notice small choices. Ask where the seconds sit, whether a date interrupts the hour scale, and how the lugs change the apparent size on a wrist. Then turn to the calibre record. A familiar face can conceal a different energy arrangement, and a new complication can alter the proportions even when the family name stays the same.

Independence reaches the regulating assembly
The house dates the introduction of its swing system to 2014, after a development programme involving the Dresden University of Technology and the Fraunhofer Institute. NOMOS’s account groups the balance, balance spring, pallet and escape wheel within this assembly. Its blue balance spring is a visible signature, but the significance is the capability to develop the parts that govern the release and rhythm of energy.
The maker describes that achievement as technological independence. This profile keeps that statement attached to the assembly and to the manufacturer’s account. It is not an audit proving that every material, tool or component is sourced internally. Nor is recognising a blue spring a sufficient way to identify an entire calibre. The calibre name and its published specification remain the more reliable starting point.

Alpha makes the winding question tangible
Alpha is the straightforward manual example. The current specification gives a movement height of 2.6 millimetres, seventeen jewels, stop-seconds and a reserve of up to forty-three hours. The owner supplies the winding through the crown; there is no automatic rotor listed in this architecture. Its three-quarter plate, ribbing and blue screws describe construction and finishing, rather than a separate promise about water resistance.
Its published special-qualities list also differs from the DUW examples: it does not name the swing system. That is a reason to resist transferring a feature across the whole house. This page does not establish a complete history of Alpha’s component suppliers, and it does not need one to teach the useful habit of reading the exact technical record.

DUW 3001 changes the route into the mainspring
DUW 3001 is an automatic neomatik calibre with a bidirectional winding rotor, the swing system, a height of 3.2 millimetres and a stated reserve of up to forty-three hours. Set beside Alpha, the similar reserve is particularly instructive: one movement replenishes its energy through manual winding, while the other can collect energy from motion of the rotor. A similar endurance figure does not mean an identical mechanism.
The automatic manual says that a watch left standing may need to be started by crown winding. It also distinguishes automatic crown behaviour from the resistance encountered when a manual watch is fully wound. That difference makes the manual important even for a simple three-hand watch. Habit learned on a hand-wound model should not be used as a diagnostic test for an automatic one.

DUW 4601 gives the date its own space
DUW 4601 brings manual winding and a quick-set date together. Its specification gives 2.8 millimetres in height, 34.6 millimetres in diameter and up to fifty-two hours of reserve. The date ring surrounds the movement, and the swing system remains part of the technical description. The wide diameter and modest height are useful dimensions to compare, rather than numbers to collapse into a general claim that smaller always means better.
The October 2025 hand-wound manual puts date correction in the second crown position and time setting in the third. It prohibits date correction between 19:30 and 00:30, when the automatic change is taking place. Those are DUW 4601 instructions. They should not be borrowed for an older date calibre simply because both watches have NOMOS on the dial.

Preserve the design decisions during service
The hand-wound manual recommends service every five years and a yearly water-resistance check. The FAQ also contains a three-to-five-year recommendation. More consequential for an owner is its description of a complete service: it includes possible component replacement and case refurbishment, with grinding and polishing described elsewhere in the same FAQ. Functional maintenance and alteration of a case surface deserve separate discussion.
Write down whether refinishing is wanted before agreeing to the work. Ask how your exact reference and its present condition affect the water-use guidance. A workshop’s planned treatment can preserve reliability while changing visible wear, so the estimate should explain both. The existing Servicing and Restoration guide provides a fuller framework for that brief; this house-specific record supplies the questions to bring to NOMOS or the retailer.

The imprint answers one kind of identity question
The current imprint identifies NOMOS Glashütte/SA Roland Schwertner KG at Ferdinand-Adolph-Lange-Platz 2 in Glashütte, names Uwe Ahrendt as full partner and gives the Dresden registry number HRA2931. This is the website’s legal disclosure as observed on 5 October 2026. The founder’s name in the trading entity and the named full partner are distinct roles; neither supplies a percentage table.
No corporate-register extract was retrieved for this profile. Accordingly, the company’s historical founding year is not silently promoted to an exact incorporation day, and the independent-company description is not converted into an unsupported sole-owner claim. Keeping those limits visible makes it possible to appreciate the movement story without turning its language of independence into a different legal assertion.

Reader exercise: make a three-calibre comparison
Draw three columns labelled Alpha, DUW 3001 and DUW 4601. Record manual or automatic winding, the stated reserve, whether the specification names the swing system, and whether a date is present. The first two have the same up-to-forty-three-hour reserve, but only DUW 3001 lists the rotor. DUW 4601 adds a date and its own crown-position instructions. Finish by writing one unknown under each column: measured rate in your use, the case’s present water resistance, or the complete component supply chain. Use the published records to fill the comparison, and leave those unknowns open. This is a reading exercise; opening or adjusting a movement is unnecessary.
