The workshop and the mechanism
Jaeger-LeCoultre traces its origins to Antoine LeCoultre’s workshop in the Vallée de Joux in 1833. Its history includes the small Calibre 101 and the Atmos clock, developed from Jean-Léon Reutter’s invention. These examples pull in different directions: one explores miniaturisation, while the other draws operating energy from environmental temperature changes.
They are useful reminders that horology extends beyond a conventional round wristwatch. Size, energy consumption and the arrangement of components are design problems in their own right.

The Reverso was a collaborative solution
The house’s account connects the Reverso to a request for a watch that could withstand the knocks of polo. René-Alfred Chauvot patented the reversible case concept on 4 March 1931. César de Trey and Jacques-David LeCoultre were involved in bringing it to market, and Wenger helped refine the case.
Early Reversos used Tavannes movements while LeCoultre developed its rectangular Calibre 410, introduced in 1933. That detail makes the story more interesting, not less: a recognisable design emerged through collaboration and staged technical development rather than appearing fully formed from a single workshop.

Read the case as part of the invention
A Reverso invites attention to the relationship between case, carrier and reverse face. The protective solution also created another surface for personalisation and later watchmaking expression. Compare the functional role of the original solid back with the uses to which the reversible format can be put.
Do not assume that an elegant modern Reverso inherits permission for vigorous sport from its origin story. The exact model’s operating and care instructions are the relevant guide to present use.
