1884: begin with the Roman house

Sotirio Bulgari opened his Via Sistina shop in Rome in 1884, bringing the skills of a Greek silversmith into a business selling silver ornaments, precious objects and antiques. That is the house’s foundation date, not the launch of a modern Swiss wristwatch factory. Distinguishing those histories makes its later watchmaking more interesting: the organisation approaches time through jewellery, surfaces and cultural references as well as mechanisms.

The useful visual question is how an object occupies the body. A bracelet can wrap, a bezel can frame, and a case can become an architectural shape. Bulgari’s watch history repeatedly moves between those possibilities. Its Roman identity describes a design vocabulary; the manufacture and specification of any particular watch still need to be established separately.

Serpenti: a watch becomes a bracelet

Bulgari dates Serpenti’s appearance as a jewellery-watch to 1948. The early concept paired a watch head with a coiling Tubogas bracelet, making time part of an object that wound around the wrist. Later interpretations made the animal more literal through scales, coloured surfaces and articulated forms. Serpenti is therefore a family of transformations, not one unchanged case and movement.

Look first at the transition from bracelet to head. Where does the indication of time become visible, and how strongly is the snake suggested? This is a different design problem from enlarging a conventional dial. The bracelet’s movement, the position of the watch head and the orientation of the numerals all affect the encounter. A jewellery-led composition still has functional choices to explain.

Tubogas: an industrial resemblance, a jewellery technique

The Tubogas story is especially revealing because its visual ancestry is industrial rather than purely ornamental. Bulgari’s historical essay relates the name and form to flexible tubing, while noting that comparable jewellery techniques predate the house’s use of them. It does not supply a single certain inventor or birth date, and neither should a short watch history.

The construction uses long metal ribbons whose shaped edges interlock around a temporary core. Once the core is removed, the structure holds together without soldering its successive coils into a rigid tube. In simple terms, the joints preserve movement while the repeated metal surfaces create a continuous appearance. This explains why the bracelet can look substantial and still flex. It does not mean every modern Serpenti bracelet uses that construction.

Bvlgari Bvlgari: turn lettering into structure

The Bvlgari Bvlgari watch of 1977 made the repeated name part of the bezel’s design. The house relates its curved inscriptions to ancient Roman coins and its cylindrical case to classical columns. These are specific design references, rather than evidence that an ancient object already contained the modern watch’s entire form.

There is a useful looking exercise here: imagine the same case with the lettering removed. The broad ring would still frame the dial, but its rhythm and visual weight would change. The watch demonstrates how typography can behave like ornament or architecture. It also cautions against using a collection name as a movement specification. A long-lived family can contain different sizes, materials and power systems while retaining its recognisable graphic idea.

Octo: architecture with more than one outline

Bulgari’s history places the modern Octo launch in 2012. Its combination of circular and angular elements asks the eye to read several outlines at once. Rather than treating an octagon as a flat badge, the design builds a sequence of surfaces and steps. The impression changes when the case is viewed obliquely, because planes that disappear from above become visible from the side.

This makes Octo a productive comparison with the Royal Oak and other shaped watches already in the library. Shared geometry does not establish shared engineering or authorship. Describe the bezel, middle case, dial opening and bracelet separately. An integrated-looking silhouette is a relationship between those parts; it is not a technical specification that can replace the dimensions of an individual reference.

Finissimo: the movement and the whole watch

The 2017 Octo Finissimo Automatic catalogue gives two measurements worth keeping apart: 2.23 mm for calibre BVL 138 and 5.15 mm for the titanium watch. A movement sits inside a larger assembly that also needs a case, crystal, dial and clearances. Quoting the thinner number as the thickness of the complete watch would misdescribe the achievement.

Reference 102713 uses a platinum micro-rotor for automatic winding. A micro-rotor occupies a recess within the movement’s footprint rather than sweeping over it as a large rotor does, helping limit height. Its smaller dimensions make the winding system’s design important; density is one useful property of platinum here. Thinness is consequently an arrangement problem as well as a component-making problem. It is not a promise that every version has the same water resistance.

Monete and a way to read the whole house

Bulgari dates its Monete watches to 1966, linking ancient coins with modern goldsmithing and time displays. Here the historical object becomes part of the composition itself, rather than merely supplying a motif. That is a different relationship to the past from the coin-inspired lettering of Bvlgari Bvlgari, and worth recognising before grouping both under a vague idea of heritage.

Read Bulgari through these separate experiments: Serpenti changes how a watch encircles the wrist; Bvlgari Bvlgari changes how a name frames a dial; Octo Finissimo changes how much mechanism fits vertically. Continue with case materials, watchmaking beyond the logo and Cartier’s shaped watches. The comparison is about design decisions and construction, with exact-reference checks whenever a claim becomes technical.
