1976 to 1996: the workshop before the name
Michel Parmigiani established his own workshop in 1976, concentrating on restoration alongside the making of complex timepieces. His work on the Sandoz collection helped form the relationship behind the launch of Parmigiani Fleurier in 1996. Those twenty years matter: the brand emerged from a practice of understanding existing mechanisms, rather than from a name and design brief alone.
A restorer has to ask why a part was made a particular way, how it interacts with its neighbours and what an intervention would change. That habit provides a useful lens for the later watches. It does not mean a modern movement is an antique replica. The connection is a way of investigating mechanical choices and preserving knowledge while finding another use for it.
Toric, Kalpa and the significance of shape
The early Toric established a case vocabulary of knurled and rounded decorative details. Kalpa supplied another avenue for shaped watchmaking, while Tonda developed the round-watch family. The house’s anniversary account highlights PF110, a tonneau-shaped movement with an eight-day reserve. Here the shape of the mechanism belongs in the story alongside the shape of the exterior.
A shaped case can contain a round movement, so one should not infer the internal outline from the dial alone. In this example, the documented movement form makes the comparison meaningful. Look at how volume is used along the length and width of the watch. The design question becomes more specific than whether a case is elegant: how do the chosen proportions accommodate the mechanism and its stored energy?

Bugatti Type 370: put the mechanism on another axis
The 2004 Bugatti Type 370 is a particularly clear counterexample to the idea that Parmigiani Fleurier makes only conventional round dress watches. The house describes a tubular movement arranged along one axis, taking a car engine as its design reference. Instead of simply adding a motoring emblem to a dial, the project reconsidered how the mechanism occupied space.
Imagine the difference between parts arranged broadly across a flat plate and elements organised along the length of a tube. The change affects the watch’s profile and how the viewer encounters its moving structure. It is an architectural analogy, not a claim that a watch functions like a combustion engine. This episode belongs beside the quieter collections because it shows the range of the same workshop’s questions.

Tonda PF: make the winding system less conspicuous
Tonda PF’s Micro-Rotor appeared in September 2021. Its automatic winding weight is integrated into the movement rather than occupying a broad layer above it. That arrangement supports a slender construction while leaving more of the movement visible through the back. The reduction in apparent complication on the dial is therefore accompanied by careful organisation inside.
Study the dial, bezel and bracelet as separate scales of detail. Fine surface texture can remain quiet at a distance and emerge when the light changes. The original date version and later no-date executions also demonstrate how removing one aperture changes the visual balance. Neither is inherently more mechanically serious. The relevant question is which information the reference shows and how successfully its layout makes that information available.
GMT Rattrapante: two hours, one clean silhouette
Introduced in 2022, the Tonda PF GMT Rattrapante places two hour hands together until a second time zone is wanted. The pusher at eight o’clock advances the upper hand in hour steps, while the other continues to indicate the reference time. A pusher in the crown brings the indications together again. The additional function can therefore be visually concealed when it is unnecessary.
Rattrapante here describes the catching-up behaviour of an hour display. It does not turn the watch into a split-seconds chronograph. That vocabulary distinction is important because the same French word appears in different mechanisms. Read the two hands as a relationship between local and reference time, then check the specific operating instructions before setting either. The understated dial does not imply an absence of complication.

Minute Rattrapante: mark a future point on the dial
The 2023 Minute Rattrapante applies a related idea to minutes. An extra hand can be advanced by one-minute or five-minute increments, establishing a point that the ordinary minute hand will eventually reach. The display creates a visible target for an interval using the familiar minute scale rather than requiring a separate counter to accumulate elapsed minutes.
For example, a target set fifteen minutes ahead becomes a reference against which the passing minute hand can be watched. This explains the concept without claiming it is an alarm or a device that stops time. It also differs from a conventional start-and-stop chronograph. Comparing the GMT and Minute versions is a useful exercise in careful naming: both can hide an extra hand, but they solve different reading problems.
The 2024 Toric: a new interpretation of restraint
The Toric Petite Seconde’s 2024 reinterpretation brought a grain-finished dial and a manually wound movement with prominent rose-gold architecture. The view through the back emphasises geometric bridges, barrels and the regulating organ. “Gold movement” should be read with care: it describes important structural elements, not a literal promise that every spring, wheel and functional component is made from one precious metal.
Compare the new Toric with Tonda PF and the tubular Bugatti. Each gives the mechanism a different relationship to the exterior, from quiet round composition to overt three-dimensional arrangement. Continue with servicing and restoration, the GMT study and watchmaking beyond the logo. Together they help separate the founder’s methods, a collection’s visual identity and the technical features of an individual reference.
