Profile details

1932 jewellery-house origin and later watchmaking milestones are distinct. The 2013 agreement excludes mining and has a separate completion date. Opus 14 collaborators, reserves and edition are not Project Z14 specifications. Read dated sources for the precise reference and claim.

Jewellery history and the later watchmaking chapter

Harry Winston’s watchmaking deserves a separate account from the house’s celebrated gemstones. Harry Winston founded the New York business in 1932, but the company’s official chronology dates its first watch collection, Premier, to 1989. The same chronology records the beginning of Opus in 2001 and the opening of a Geneva timepiece manufacture in 2007. These dates describe a later horological chapter within an older jewelry house. They should not be collapsed into a claim that Harry Winston was manufacturing wristwatches continuously from 1932.

Agreement and acquisition completion

The present corporate setting has a clear transaction record. Swatch Group announced an agreement on 14 January 2013 to acquire the jewelry and watch activities through HW Holdings. It explicitly excluded the seller’s mining activities. A separate announcement dated 26 March 2013 confirmed completion after regulatory approvals. This distinction is important: the date of an acquisition announcement is not necessarily its closing date, and ownership of the luxury brand does not imply ownership of the former diamond-mining business.

Named collaboration in Opus

Opus is the clearest expression of the house’s horological contribution. Rather than presenting every invention as the isolated achievement of an anonymous factory, the series foregrounded collaboration with independent watchmakers. The series explored new ways of displaying time. The brand’s 2015 Opus 14 release explicitly credits Franck Orny and Johnny Girardin and places their work within the collaborative series begun in 2001. Both watchmakers and commissioning house belong in this history.

The Opus 14 jukebox choreography

Opus 14 also offers a documented story more memorable than an invented celebrity anecdote. Its inspiration was the 1950s jukebox. A mechanism selects a disk and transfers it to a reading platform, while the local-time disk remains at nine o’clock. The release gives a 54.7 mm gold case and 1,066 components, with separate reserves for timekeeping and disk operation: up to 68 hours for the former and five out-and-back disk transfers for the latter. The jukebox connection concerns choreography, not playing music. The original release announced fifty pieces.

The Project Z14 reference

For a more compact signature reference, Project Z14, OCEARS42ZZ001, provides a useful contrast. The official page checked on 5 October 2026 lists a 42.2 mm Zalium case, 10.7 mm thickness, ten-bar water resistance and automatic calibre HW2202. Its functions are off-center hours and minutes with retrograde seconds; the stated edition is 300. The openworked display distributes the indications among structural-looking elements rather than asking a single conventional dial to carry everything. These specifications apply to Z14, not the very different Opus 14 despite their shared number.

Information as a mechanical subject

The comparison helps explain why this house belongs in a watchmaking survey. Mechanical imagination can concern how information appears, not only how accurately a balance oscillates or how many jewels surround it. Opus and Project Z invite the reader to look at the movement of information across the watch, giving the horological chapter its own subject and vocabulary.

Track information and energy without merging references

Sketch a generic stored disk, its reading platform and a separate local-time display. Then give timekeeping reserve and disk-operation reserve different labels and units. A moving display can require energy without being a musical mechanism. Compare that choreography with Project Z14's retrograde indication, keeping each reference's case and edition figures in its own column. This is a study of how information reaches the reader, not a reconstruction of Opus 14's patented mechanism or a claim to have handled either watch.
