An institutional origin and a watch that acquired a name
CITIZEN's own account begins with the Shokosha Research Institute and dates its heritage to 1918. It places the first pocket watch in 1924 and credits Tokyo mayor Shinpei Goto with suggesting CITIZEN as its name. The person naming a product is doing a different job from the people establishing its workshop. This account does not identify a sole individual founder, so that role remains unresolved in this chapter.
A useful way to read this beginning is to draw three boxes: institution, product and name. An anniversary can connect them emotionally without making their dates interchangeable. The story presents a domestic watch intended for a broad public, but an aspiration about accessibility is not a measured comparison of prices or production. Keep the naming episode as a documented maker account, then let later references show how that broad ambition becomes particular watches.
Evidence: About CITIZEN
The corporate chronology has its own dates
The issuer's chronology dates Shokosha's establishment to March 1918, its first pocket watch to December 1924 and Citizen Watch Co., Ltd. to May 1930. It names Yosaburo Nakajima as president that May. Those entries supply an institutional sequence and a dated officeholder, rather than proof that a single person founded every organisation in the sequence. The same chronology records the first wristwatch in June 1931.
Later corporate names also deserve their dates. The chronology records Citizen Holdings in 2007, then a merger and a return to Citizen Watch Co., Ltd. in October 2016. This means that an old document headed Holdings and a new product page headed Watch can belong to related corporate chapters. A reference investigator should preserve the document's original name and date before deciding how it maps onto the current brand. Retrospective chronology remains different from a contemporary incorporation record.
Evidence: Corporate History
One CITIZEN watch brand within a wider company
The current corporate profile identifies Citizen Watch Co., Ltd. and describes both watch business and holding-company responsibilities. It lists the issuer on the Tokyo Stock Exchange's Prime section under code 7762. That supports a present corporate identity on the review date; it does not identify one ultimate private owner. A complete current shareholder-control assessment was not undertaken here, and individual ownership percentages remain unknown.
Read CITIZEN as a watch-brand identity within the wider Citizen corporate group. Alpina and Frederique Constant have their own histories and designs, which need separate investigation. A collection or technical label below CITIZEN describes a more particular subject within the brand. This boundary lets the reader compare design decisions without mistaking a portfolio, a legal company and a dial name for the same kind of organisation. Record their relationships before deciding which evidence belongs to the selected watch.

Eco-Drive separates light, stored energy and timekeeping
CITIZEN explains Eco-Drive through conversion of light into electrical energy, storage in a secondary battery and delivery to the watch. It describes both under-dial and ring-shaped solar cells. These are maker-described architectures, not independent efficiency measurements. A cell arrangement should be identified for the reference being studied rather than assigned to the entire brand.
The design question is how to gather energy while retaining a readable dial. Trace input, storage and output separately from the regulation of time. The page qualifies endurance by model and says power saving is not universal. Therefore the technology name alone cannot predict a particular watch's duration in darkness. Its exact charging instructions remain manual-specific.

Radio control corrects a watch under reception conditions
The maker describes radio-controlled watches receiving standard-time signals to correct time and date. Its world multi-band coverage discussion names Japan, China, Germany and the United States, while expressly saying that reception range varies by model. Buildings, terrain, radio noise and weather can affect reception. A coverage illustration is therefore an orientation aid rather than a guarantee at any point inside a drawn circle.
This creates two separate questions for the owner: did the watch receive a usable signal, and how does it keep time between successful receptions? A remote atomic-clock figure answers neither question by itself. Compare a named watch's reception result and its own unsynchronised specification, instead of assigning the transmitter's rate to the wristwatch. The distinction also explains why a familiar dial can involve a changing relationship with its surroundings. This account is documentary reading, not a reception test in any particular building.

Satellite Wave adds a location question
CITIZEN's Satellite Wave GPS account describes obtaining time and position information from orbiting satellites to set local time. It qualifies time-zone coverage by model and advises an outdoor setting with fewer obstructions for reception. These details make the technology a relationship among the watch, the sky and the applicable local-time information. They do not establish that every watch bearing a satellite-related name performs the same operations.
Imagine preparing a reference card for travel. Put the energy source on one line, the external time source on another and local-time selection on a third. This avoids treating a solar cell as a position receiver or treating received time as proof of an automatically correct civil-time rule everywhere. The chapter does not repeat the maker's reception-speed records as independent comparisons. Specific controls, supported zones and any later changes to regional time rules belong in the exact model's current documentation.

Super Titanium describes material and surface treatment
The maker defines Super Titanium through titanium treated with its Duratect surface-hardening technology. That description joins a substrate to a surface process; it is more useful than reading the name as a wholly separate elemental metal. CITIZEN also qualifies its allergy language by noting that not all Super Titanium models are metal-allergy or nickel-allergy resistant. No universal medical suitability is asserted here.
When studying a reference, ask which parts use the named treatment and which parts use another material. A case, bracelet, fastening pin and coating need not answer that question identically. This helps explain why a broad material label does not replace a component list or a care instruction. Hardness, weight and corrosion are also different properties: a claim about one does not prove the others for a complete watch. The page is evidence of the maker's material description, without an independent laboratory or wearing assessment.

A060 and the light-permeable washi dial
The 17 September 2026 announcement identifies AQ4100-65X and AQ4106-00B with Caliber A060 and Tosa washi paper dials. CITIZEN explains that the paper permits light to reach the Eco-Drive movement while supplying visible texture. Its specification states an annual accuracy of plus or minus five seconds and an 18-month duration from full charge in power-save mode. These are the maker's model claims, not measured results from a specimen.
Paper therefore participates in both the appearance and the energy path of these particular watches. The important reading habit is to retain the power-save condition beside the reserve figure. A long sleeping duration does not imply eighteen months of every display moving normally. The announcement schedules an October 2026 launch and says final specifications may change, so the chapter records an announced model rather than assuming confirmed availability. The CITIZEN collection and the A060 calibre describe different layers of the selected reference.
A mechanical traveller within the same brand
The 24 September 2026 Series 8 announcement describes NB6092-01E using Caliber 9054. Its GMT explanation says the local hour hand can move in one-hour steps without changing the minute, seconds or 24-hour hands. The proposed October launch remains scheduled in the document. The maker also explains its contemporary Damascus steel as layered stainless steel, preventing a historical material name from being read as an unchanged ancient recipe.
The reading task is different from simply spotting a fourth hand. An independently adjustable local hour can support a traveller's change of location while another indication preserves a reference time. The exact operation still belongs to the model instructions. CITIZEN's stated mechanical rate and reserve are product specifications with conditions, not this chapter's performance findings. This watch also prevents Eco-Drive from becoming an inaccurate shorthand for the entire brand: a collection can share CITIZEN's identity while using a different source of motive energy.

Mechanical authorship includes a named collaboration
The current Caliber 0200/0210 page expressly connects CITIZEN's skills with La Joux-Perret's artistry. It also distinguishes named 0200 references from 0210 references with a date. That is a useful source of technical authorship and display scope. It does not, by itself, disclose every component supplier or justify claiming that one organisation independently manufactures every part of each finished watch.
Read collaboration as a positive piece of information rather than an imperfection to hide behind a broad manufacture label. A movement can involve design, processing, decoration, assembly and adjustment, and these are different contributions. Here the public page names participants but supplies only part of that production map. The responsible comparison is consequently between documented roles and specific calibres. It also brings the article back to its origin: the broad CITIZEN name accommodates several ways of making and regulating watches, which deserve precise descriptions rather than a single technological stereotype.

Original exercise: three paths through one watch
Draw three horizontal lines on paper and label them energy, regulation and external correction. Using one selected reference discussed here, place only documented features on the appropriate lines. Leave a blank where the source gives no answer. Then write one question whose answer would require its exact manual and one whose answer would require an independent measurement.
Now copy a reserve statement twice: first as an isolated number, then with its starting charge and operating mode. Explain why the second version is the useful comparison. This is a document-reading exercise; do not expose, open or operate a watch to complete it.
