An idea, a launch and a later Swiss merger

Mike France's official account names Peter Ellis and Chris Ward as his fellow co-founders. It places their business idea on a Thames boat trip in May 2004, followed by the launch on 2 June 2005 with the C5 Malvern Automatic and C3 Malvern Chronograph. The same retrospective records work with Synergies Horlogères from 2008 and the companies' announced merger in 2014. These are separate stages, rather than one interchangeable founding date.

A young house’s dates answer distinct questions: when did its idea begin, when could a customer buy a watch, and when did its technical organisation change? The surname should prompt a people question too. Recording commercial and technical roles makes the history clearer than treating a dial name as a complete account of authorship.

Evidence: Our Story

The operator and its disclosed corporate parent

The published terms identify Christopher Ward London Limited, registration 05167936, as the UK operating company. They describe it and CW Watches Inc as wholly owned subsidiaries of Christopher Ward (London) Holdings Limited, registration 09076361. The website terms display an update date of 3 July 2024. This supplies a public corporate-parent relationship on the review date; it does not establish every shareholder of that holding company or its ultimate beneficial owners.

Attach a date and document type to an ownership sentence. The watch seller, its corporate parent and the people owning that parent can be different layers. Prominence in a founder narrative cannot settle the last layer. Leave a space for a current register or transaction document, so a later researcher knows which further evidence would improve this account.

Bel Canto: an hour announced once

For C1 Bel Canto reference C01-41APT0-T00B1-VLB, the maker identifies a Sellita SW200-1 base with its FS01 striking module. The mechanism gives one passing chime each hour. Christopher Ward attributes the module to technical director Frank Stelzer and describes its development from a jumping-hour mechanism. The card places a hammer and steel spring around a raised time display. These are maker descriptions of a specific watch, rather than findings from dismantling or listening tests.

An audible event can mark a boundary without supplying a complete spoken time. Imagine hearing it while reading elsewhere: its meaning depends on the interval and displayed hour. Ask what triggers the sound, what information it encodes, and whether the wearer requests it. Those questions give striking mechanisms an intelligible vocabulary, without assuming every audible watch works alike.

Read the handbook as a map of control modes

The linked Bel Canto handbook distinguishes normal winding and time-setting crown positions, and its English pages 6-8 identify the separate control for silencing or enabling the chime. The text describes an indicator changing between those states. The profile does not adopt a particular indicator colour or reserve figure. Identifying the correct handbook and revision remains necessary before applying its instructions to an individual reference.

A useful reading method is to mark each control beside its purpose, then draw a boundary between changing a displayed time and changing a sound setting. That boundary prevents a reader from treating every external button as a chronograph control. Keep the document heading beside the sketch and record any detail that conflicts with another publication. An owner's uncertainty is often a matching problem before it is a mechanical problem: the right question is which document applies, followed by what that document actually instructs.

Sealander GMT: identify which hand adjusts

The current white, 36 mm C63 Sealander GMT card identifies reference C63-36AGM4-S00W0-B0 and Sellita SW330-2. Its movement description says the central GMT hand can be set independently. The specification distinguishes a minimum reserve from a typical figure, illustrating why a headline number should not be treated as a measured result. The reference and the independently adjustable indication are the bounded facts needed here.

For travel reading, start with two imagined locations and decide which one a secondary indication should represent. Then ask what an adjustment would change: the main civil-time display, the secondary pointer, or a surrounding scale. Write the answer in plain words before using specialist labels. That exercise helps expose a common ambiguity in a broad collection name: watches sharing the same purpose may provide different adjustment behaviours. A calibre name and an applicable manual make the comparison more precise than a category alone.

The Twelve: exterior continuity, current specification

The Twelve card for C12-40ADA1-S00B4-B0 describes a twelve-sided bezel, integrated bracelet and textured three-dimensional dial in a 40 mm steel watch. The current movement heading identifies Sellita SW200-2 Power+. These details bind this discussion to the present card rather than an earlier launch specification. Its design vocabulary combines shape, surface treatment and the transition between watch head and bracelet.

Try describing a watch from the outside inward. Begin with the outline; then describe how a bright edge meets a flatter surface, how a repeating dial pattern changes visual density, and how the attachment continues the case. The method develops a vocabulary of relationships instead of an inventory of luxury adjectives. It also keeps appearance separate from provenance: an attractive transition does not identify a component's maker. Exterior observations and documentary movement identification can sit together while answering different questions about the same object.

Twelve X: an exposed movement and named partner work

Twelve X (Ti) reference C12-41A5D0-T00K0-B0 names Calibre SH21 CA and a 120-hour reserve. The maker describes twin barrels and an open architecture. Its account credits Paoluzzo with diamond-cut machining used for the multi-angled bridgework. This source therefore supports both a movement-family example and an acknowledged production partnership; it does not establish that every component is made by one company.

An exposed mechanism offers a useful opportunity to separate visibility from understanding. A viewer can identify recurring visual shapes without yet knowing how energy passes between them. Use an annotated reading sheet with spaces for observed forms, manufacturer terminology and unresolved questions. A visible finish belongs in the first two spaces; an explanation of torque or accuracy needs its own evidence. This approach lets a reader appreciate construction while resisting the temptation to convert an impressive view into a performance conclusion.

Service: a condition record begins with inspection

Christopher Ward's service page says final repair or service pricing follows receipt and inspection. Its published sequence includes disassembly, component cleaning, new lubrication and gasket replacement, with regulation or demagnetisation where necessary. The maker recommends servicing every three to four years. These are its public maintenance statements, not a diagnosis of a particular watch or a guaranteed cost.

A service record becomes most useful when it says what was observed and what was changed. In a hypothetical ownership file, leave separate spaces for symptoms, inspection findings, authorised work and the returned watch's checks. That structure makes later comparisons possible: a vague note that a watch was serviced cannot explain which concern was addressed. It also allows the historical profile to remain distinct from the specimen's condition. A mechanism may be well documented while the watch in front of an owner still needs professional examination.

Guarantee coverage is another kind of evidence

The movement-guarantee page describes five-year mechanical-fault coverage with exclusions and says inspection determines whether a repair is covered. It also discusses transferring the guarantee with suitable ownership documents. The page's start-date wording is not completely uniform, so an owner should confirm the applicable terms. No individual entitlement follows from this chapter. The policy is a dated support record, not proof of a watch's running condition.

Read a guarantee beside the purchase and service paperwork, giving each document its own job. Purchase evidence locates an acquisition; service evidence describes work; coverage terms establish conditions for a claim. A reader should be able to explain which document answers a question without letting a long warranty stand in for technical assessment. In a comparison between houses, the useful result is a precise description of the published framework and an honest account of what remains case specific, rather than a promise about future repair outcomes.

Reader exercise: design two channels of information

Draw an imaginary desk clock with a visual display and one audible event at a boundary of your choice. Invent a clear rule for what the event means, and write a short explanation for someone who cannot see the display. Now hide that rule and ask which meanings a listener might mistakenly assign. Revise the explanation to resolve the ambiguity. On a second sheet, invent two documentary dates for the same imaginary project: the beginning of design and the first customer delivery. Explain why both belong in its history. This paper exercise tests information design and chronology; it does not reproduce any watch mechanism or operating sequence.
